Council Boss Denies Causing Student’s Death
From Samuel Ilani, Idah
THE Chairman of Igalamela Odolu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Ernest Abah has denied a report credited to National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) that he ordered the killing of a PR-ND student of Federal Polytechnic , Idah, Late Haruna Mohammed.
In the report published in the Sun Newspaper of August 14, 2008 edition, it was alleged that the Chairman who was also target of political thugs, ordered the killing of the late student.
While expressing regret over the killing of the innocent student, Hon. Abah said in a statement issued by his Personal Assistant, Amos Idakwo, that the NANS officials were misinformed over the real cause of the death.
He affirmed that the report credited to the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Comrade Joshua Musa, was misleading and done in bad light.
“The true position is that there was a gathering of PDP faithfuls, chieftain, and chiefs in Chairman’s residence on No. 34 Odolu Road, Idah on August 1, 2008. While the meeting was in session, thugs hired by a highly placed politician who was opposed to the proceedings of the meeting, moved in from Ajaka in two truck load. They drove in towards Inachalo River and started shooting sporadically. Some of them moved to the residence of the Chairman, while others took positions at the end of perimeter fence of ISCC. It was the indiscriminate shooting of the thugs that killed the innocent student . As a father and teacher, the chairman condemned the act as dastardly act. He did not order any one. He was their target like any other innocent fellow”, the statement said.
The Chairman spokesman said that contrary to the claims of NANS, the thugs chased away all dignitaries from his house and he had to escape cold-blooded murder with his family by the grace of God.
Consequently, the statement averred that the hoodlums burnt two official vehicle, chairman’s official car and the one belonging to the chairman of PDP in the LGA, Hon. Jacob Edime.
The statement equally pointed out that all the property the chairman work hard to get including the family house, were raged down. Some of the items of property were either burnt or carted as spoils of war.
While stating that as a teacher and father, “the chairman lives with the fear of God,” the statement maintained that the innocent student was murdered by stray bullets fired by thugs that were hired by a top politician.
The statement also stated that Mr. David Edime is not a cousin of the Chairman as claimed in the publication, stressing that “ the issue of appointing the cousin of the Chief Executive of the Council area as Secretary does not arise.”
