KSU toEstablish Faculty of Med, 2 others
* Holds 1st Public Lecture

By Noah Ocheni
KOGI State University (KSU), Anyigba is to establish Faculties of Medicine, Education and Engineering in order to produce the desired manpower for the rapid development of the country.
The Vice Chancellor of Kogi State University, Professor Francis Idachaba disclosed this while declaring open the first inaugural lecture of the University delivered by the Dean, Faculty of Natural Science, Prof. Sunday Arogba held at the Professor F. S. Idachaba Twin Lecture Theatre KSU, Anyigba.
Professor Idachaba noted that such establishment would constitute noble academic culture, adding that the University is expecting government’s support to enhance the take-off of these new faculties.
He stressed that the University Administration under his leadership has transformed Kogi State University to a centre of academic excellence and the feat is unparalled in the annual of development of higher institution.
The purpose of University’s inaugural lecture, according to him, is to provide a newly appointed Professor in any discipline opportunity to present to the academic community and the world at large the body of knowledge that such person professes.
Prof. Idachaba further stated that the lecture also provides the professor the opportunity to share with the people the knowledge generated by his or her research in terms of theory, methodological advances, empirical knowledge or in other aspects of his or her contribution to knowledge.
The Vice Chancellor noted that the inaugural lecturer might also indicate the existing gaps in knowledge in the discipline of the lecturer as highlighted by his or her research that might open new vistas for future research by other academics.
He was optimistic that after the first inaugural lecture in KSU, subsequent lectures would roll out in the months and years ahead, in consonance with the calendar of lectures that would be endorsed by the senate of the University.
In his lecture titled, “Phenolics; A class of Nature’s chemical weapons of self-preservation,” Prof. Arogba pointed out that in natural products chemistry, phenolics are considered as waste products of primary metabolic processes.
These metabolites, according to him were not initially thought to be of any particular use to plants in which they occurred, or to man. But scientific evidence abound today identifying them with numerous biological activities of value.
